Compass Corrector Kits

Compass Correctors are very simple to use. First find a level surface on the boat that will have no shadows from the boat when it turns in a circle and place the compass corrector (which has suction cups) there. Next, select the time of the day when there is the strongest shadow, about 4 hours before or after noontime. From a chart determine the true bearings for a straight course. On this course, set the dial so the shadow from the perpendicular pin will read the bearing from the map. Once the dial is tightened in place, you can read the true course for every point on the compass as the boat is circled. If one person steers the boat, a second person can read the true bearings. On the compass deviation chart, one can record the variation of the compass.

There are two compass corrector kits, one is a low cost kit for the small boat owner which is a "5 Minute do it yourself compass corrector kit" that has a 2 7/8" dial with 5 degree markings. The other kit is a "Professional compass corrector kit" that has a 4 7/8" dial with one degree markings.

Both units have been manufactured to extremely high accuracy standards by using computer layout and computer numerical control machines to manufacture them.
